Important Points – You must keep in mind when selecting University

Dear GenZs,
I hope the previous article has given you a better insight into things to do when university starts, and ways to survive what might seem like a daunting task to many of you. Below are a few important points you must keep in mind before you join a university.

ACCREDITATION:

Before you start binge researching anything about your dream university, it’s very important to first make sure that your college is accredited. This simply means, an officially licensed organisation has assessed the university and reviewed its curriculum to verify that the university meets the basic academic requirements. This will help in ensuring that your degree is recognised by other academic institutions or employers in various organisations.

LOCATION:

The location of your university plays a big role in shaping your college experience. You might like the university, its course, and fellow students, but if you dislike the place it would make the next four years quite tough to get through. Ask yourself a few questions like, if you would prefer to stay close to your home or willing to go farther away; do you favor big happening cities or someplace calm and quiet? Also check out weather insights, the local culture, and ask yourself if you can you afford the expense of going abroad, etc. Try opting for universities located in the top 10 safest cities in the world – this will bring relief to your parents who are sending you away from home for what might be your first time, and instils confidence in you to enjoy a worthy experience in a new destination. Try planning a trip to the university you plan to study in so that you can familiarise yourself with the place better.

FACULTY:

Try to develop a basis of comparison about different professors and their backgrounds. This will help you in getting a better understanding of their qualifications. Most universities do provide information about their professors and take the utmost pride in their expert faculty. A professor at this stage in life is more than just a teacher; they guide you by inculcating valuable skills, and prepare you for adult life. They also train you to tackle real-life problems with a breeze, which is one of the main reasons why they are so important when choosing the right university. You could also try visiting the university where you might be given the chance to communicate with them and understand your course and its advantages in the right perspective.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

You’d want to have some basic plan about your academic career and your ultimate goal that you want to achieve in life. At this point, you don’t have to decide on anything, but start giving it some thought and always have it in the back of your mind. This would help you understand if the university will help you meet your goals in life. Research their career counselling services, their placement cell, the percentage of students getting placed in employment, and their alumni network. The more active they are, the better opportunities for your career.

GAINING PERSPECTIVE:

Choosing the right university is a huge undertaking in anyone’s life. One must give enough time and thought to the process itself to ride to the right conclusion. You must weigh all the pros and cons carefully to help you easily navigate through the process. Take the process step by step, one decision at a time – this will make the daunting task easier. Try talking to elders, family and friends, and senior university students to gain a better perspective of the course and the university you wish to take admission at. More importantly, stay calm and enjoy the process because this time will determine your future. Start general and gain motion towards becoming more specific with the range of options.

Follow these 5 rules and you will end up with the right college for yourself, just the way you wanted it to be. Don’t forget to balance your academics with your social life and enjoy your time at university to the maximum, because this time will never come back. University is the time to make the best memories and shape your career. So, pull up your socks and take the ride, GenZs, towards the bright future that lies ahead of you..
