Education plays a pivotal role in every student’s life. A career in Education and training is considered a noble one across the globe. Educators pass on accumulated knowledge to the new generatio, shaping the future of the country. Educators require a perfect blend of essential attributes like patience, confidence, liking for and an understanding of children/ students.
Education & training is such a broad domain that different skills and types of training are required for different levels. Areas of specialisation include teaching at nursery schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities, institutes, and special schools, etc.
The demand for qualified educators is on the rise and this trend is not likely to change anytime in the near future. Whether you’re interested in working as a professor or elementary school teacher, a special educator instructor or corporate trainer, you’re sure to find a career in education extremely rewarding.
For different levels, a different set of qualifications is required – ranging from nursery, which requires a higher secondary degree (10+2 examination) along with B.Ed. to university level, where one requires at least a masters degree with NET qualification certificate. For applicants planning to enter the domain of training, they need to gain relevant expertise and experience.
DEGREES IN EDUCATION

Bachelors of Education (B.Ed.)
Bachelors of Education (B.Ed.) is an undergraduate degree, which lets you pursue a career mainly in teaching. The minimum qualification required for B.Ed. is Bachelor of Arts (B.A) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). This degree brings eligibility to teach the grades of 1 – 8.
Students who would like to teach in the commerce fields would require a B.Ed. in commerce. To purse a B.Ed. the candidate must hold bachelor’s degree in commerce subjects with 50% of the marks.
For those who would like to pursue teaching in a science career, they would require a B.Ed. in Science. To pursue B.Ed. the candidate must hold a bachelor degree of Science with minimum 50% marks.
One who aspires to become sports teacher or trainer, also would require B.Ed. (P.E). To pursue a B.Ed. (P.E) candidates should have pursued a bachelor’s degree in P.E as a compulsory/elective subject or a bachelor’s degree with 50% marks and participation in the inter college/inter zonal/district sports competition.
Master of Education (M.Ed.)
Master of Education is a post-graduate degree. Masters courses are done in order to advance careers in the teaching and administrative field. However, the minimum eligibility states that it is not compulsory to have a B.Ed, but any undergraduate degree, which could be a B.A., B.Sc., B.Ed., etc. with 50% marks. M.Ed. brings the eligibility to be a higher secondary teacher, lecturer, principal, corporate trainer, etc.
To become a lecturer in the commerce field would require M.Ed. (commerce subjects). The eligibility to pursue M.Ed. is to have a bachelor’s degree in specified commerce subjects with 50% marks.
The science field would also require M.Ed. The eligibility to pursue M.Ed. is to have a B.Sc degree in specified science subjects with 50% marks.
An M.Ed. degree in physical education would require a bachelor’s degree in P.E with 50% marks.
A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest academic degree of any subject. It’s awarded to students who complete an original thesis offering a significant new contribution to knowledge in their subject. It creates job opportunities in science & research, consultancy etc.
To pursue a PhD. in the commerce field, the candidate must to hold a masters degree in commerce in specified subjects with an aggregate of 55% marks, and also with valid PHD entrance test along with the interview.
In the science field, the candidate must to hold a masters degree in science in specified subjects with an aggregate of 55% marks, and also with valid PHD entrance test along with the interview.
The minimum requirement of PhD in P.E is to hold a M.P.ED., or its equivalent degree or M.Phil. in P.E. The candidate should have also cleared the common entrance exam conducted by the university.
SPECIALISATIONS IN EDUCATION

Deciding on the specialisation you desire is the next important part after the accomplishment of the minimum education requirement to become a teacher. There are many options you can choose from, but keep in mind every school does not have the same programmes.
Below are a few specialisations you can choose from:
Early Childhood Education
This education specialisation will qualify you to work with students in preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school. Coursework includes creative play, child development, children’s literature, and early childhood literacy.
This education specialisation will qualify you to apply for administrative roles in public and private schools. After completing courses in organisational leadership, strategic planning, process management and knowledge management, you may have to complete a capstone project or practicum.
This education specialisation will not only make you an effective teacher, but can also prepare you for a career in educational research and school counselling. You can complete courses in human development, psychological research, the psychological foundations of education, and instructional design.
This education specialisation is ideal for educators who desire to work as a reading specialist or reading teacher. The core courses include young adult literature, children’s literature, literacy instruction, language diversity and elementary and secondary reading assessment.
This education specialisation is an amazing way to study how to help students of all races and ethnic backgrounds. You can also assume a leadership role in an institution having race-relations or diversity initiatives. After completing the basic course requirement in education theory you will have to focus on multicultural education and ethnic diversity.
TESOL/ ESL/ Bilingual
This education specialisation includes coursework in English structure, curriculum design, sociolinguistics, and language analysis. Also, if you are interested in teaching abroad ,this is the one for you – TESOL/ESL specialisation will give you the skills required to teach English to speakers of other languages.
This education specialisation will prepare you to work with students in special populations. You can take courses in emotional disturbances, autism spectrum disorders, teaching gifted and exceptional children, general special education and learning disabilities; according to your interests.
This education specialisation will help you to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The STEM specialisation includes coursework in learning technologies in STEM, STEM educational standards, and STEM instruction. Teachers with this specialisation are high in demand.
Though you might be assuming the education sector is only for teachers, there are several other opportunities within the sector right from academics, school counsellor, administration or education psychologist, education social work/enterprise, and many other fields that provide you with great exposure.
